They produce wheat, wine and olive oil in abundance. Olives grow particularly well in the stony soil. Villages such as Altamura still have public ovens where women come to bake their bread each day. At harvest time in mid-September, the streets are covered with almonds which have been harvested and left to dry in the sun. You
